Ride the Rakaia     Bike Race - 3 March 2012

2012 RESULTS

Entries Now CLOSE 12 noon Friday 2nd March 2012

Ride the Rakaia is something you can’t go out and do any day. You will experience the amazing river crossing twice, first crossing over the Rakaia River on State Highway 1, "We have Traffic Manageent plan approval to close the Rakaia Bridge and Overhead Bridge for the race" the 1.8 kilometer crossing is not ridden over on a bike very often, so just imagine 1,000 cyclist crossing it at once and you’re one of these people, especially in the inaugural year.  1,000 cyclists will form a peloton of 1 kilometer.

This crossing will be in a controlled ride which forms the start of the race and will also travel over the Rakaia Overhead Bridge before turning off State highway one heading west and up to the Rakaia Gorge.  The ride will travel up to Windwistle then down into the amazing Rakaia Gorge where you will cross the two gorge bridges.  You may get a chance to take in the amazing views as you go through the gorge and as you climb out of the gorge towards Mt Hutt Station you’ll have time to view the scenery.

Once you get to Mt Hutt Station you will head towards Methven then turn back down towards Rakaia and enjoy the fast downhill ride, through Barhill and finish in Rakaia township. This ride will be something you will remember for life, crossing the Rakaia River twice in one day on a bike crossing four bridges, fast downhill, magic scenery during a good climb and a fast second half of the ride towards the finish.

Prize giving will be in the Rakaia Domain where you will enjoy some great entertainment in a picnic environment.  For families this will be fun for everyone. If you’re the support crew, you’ll be able to see your rider take off and while they’re out enjoying the ride you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy the tranquil Rakaia setting, have a coffee and look around Salmon World, take a snap shot of the mighty salmon, then move on to the finish line and see your rider come to the fast sprint finish.  Then move on to the Rakaia Domain for prize giving and live entertainment, Thomas Coffey will be singing and entertaining you all.  Food and drinks will be available.

This will be a nice 103 kilometer ride starting at 8.00am, just 55 km’s from Christchurch, if you're from Christchurch you don’t have to worry about accommodation or getting transport from point A to B the start finish in the same location. What a race and what a day out!
